Recycling center today

After getting stuck in a rut and not progressing anywhere, I made a trip to Recycling center to find something inspiring. Good timing: lots of crocheted doilies, a pretty tea cup, some embroidered tablecloths, and a fabric bag that edvertises some "New Watch Shop" in Helsinki. Plus some men's shirts, collection of Oscar Wilde's plays and t-shirts asking to be remade with lace additions - for free! Our recycling center has this wonderful free room where one can find great basic items and weird treasures.

Cute little animals

More antique needlework I just could not pass at the thrift store although i have no idea what I'm going to do with it (apart from starting a museum). It's a eyeglass case from year 1903, decorated with tiny yet quite funky cross-stitch animals and plants.

Those cute squirrels remind me of this cute little furry animal (shrew?)my dad found in the sauna fallen to a plastic bucket. Poor little thing was shocked at first, running around the bucket, but when we started feeding him dead mosquitoes calmed down real quick. Isn't he the cutest? Tail not included about 2,5 cm long. It's like a real live Pokemon!
Kotelon oravat muistuttavat söpöydessään jotenkin vanhempieni luona saunapaljusta löytynyttä päästäistä. Otusparka juoksi hysteerisenä ympyrää minkä pienillä töppöjalkoillaan pääsi, mutta kun sille tarjoiltiin liiskattuja hyttysiä, rauhoittui syömään. Ehkä kesän liikuttavin ilmestys. Ilman häntää noin 2,5 cm pitkä miniotus. Ihan kuin joku Pokemon!

PS. We did let him free in the forest but I sort of wish I could keep one of his kind as a pet...
PS.

..anything you can draw

It's been said before, but lace can be any shape you can draw. Here's more proof via http://thomasburr.wordpress.com, photos from Russian Lace Museum and their collection of Soviet lace. Tractors, power lines and military ships!
It's beyond me why no-one makes tractor lace for sale these days (and I suspect even these were handmade, not for general use.) I'd buy tractor lace right away! Or any other less usual motif.

From 8Tokyo, trim of a NeNet brand tunic - masked wrestlers! Now this is going to the right direction I think so I'm not going to nitpick about laser-cut fabric not being lace.
NeNet-merkkisen tunikan koriste 8Tokyosta - naamiopainijoita!

Some runway looks relevant to lace.

Coffee and photographs

Lace Book girls marking their favourite photos from the photoshoot (me with a pink heart, Riina with a green squiggle and Emmi with a gray X). / Pitsikirjan tytöt merkkaamassa suosikkikuviaan kuvauksen sadosta (minä: pinkki sydän, Riina: vihreä kiemura, Emmi: harmaa ruksi).

Perhaps we will have some cute illustrations in the book too! I love Emmi's girls.
Kirjaan saattaa tulla somia kuvituksia. Tykkään hurjasti Emmin piirtämistä tytöistä.

Emmi had found some thread treasures at a flea market / Emmin kirpputorilöytöjä

Hand-written instructions for different crochet laces / käsinkirjoitettuja pitsinvirkkuureseptejä. Ihana käsiala.

Number 16 crochet hook. One almost needs a magnifying glass to see the tip. / Numeron 16 virkkuukoukku. Virkkaamiseen tarvinnee suurennuslasin.

We also peeked in Café Villipuutarha which was in the middle of a renovation. (prettiest renovation in progress I ever saw by the way). Don't you just see our pretty lace clothes in there?

The day before yesterday, I worked several hours sewing a bag with a tape lace rose. It didn't turn out at all like I had thought and it was quite depressing. I wanted to throw it to the trash. But then I showed it to my textile designer friend who gave some good advice how to rescue it. I felt better and went on to make another bag, which turned out quite cute! I'm very happy with this one. It's got recycled bamboo handles from an old ugly kids' bag. Embroidery is wobbly, but I like it that way. Perhaps I'll make a skirt with these lace dress girls all around the hem (just tell me if I'm getting too sweet and sugary...).

Bambukahvat on kierrätetty rumasta vanhasta lasten käsilaukusta. Kirjonta vaappuu, mutta pidän sellaisesta. Ehkä teen vielä hameen, jonka helmaa kiertää tälläisten pitsimekkotyttöjen rivi (sanokaa vaan jos alkaa mennä liian imeläksi..).

Pölhö mutta iloinen tipu!

We do it ourselves

Some pics of ruffly goodness from teens' sewing book "We Do It Ourselves" from year 1959. Though fifties weren't that great time for lace, it was mostly used only in "underthings", sleepwear and collars.

Eyelets and Swan Lake

I hope I didn't scare you with all the autumn talk in the last entry. It's still summer!
Current project is turning a mens' shirt into a girly, light summer cover-up one can use to protect her skin from too much sun. I've shortened the sleeves and sewn large irregular scallops, and the front will get eyelet decoration. It's quite slow work, my husband remarked I'm like a little moth, making holes to garments but slower :) .
I borrowed balleet cd's from the library to give my sewing a nice soundtrack. Coppelia, Romeo & Juliet, Swan Lake etc... very dainty day today, ballet and embroidery.

Little ballet dancers / pikku ballerinat

Sunset at my parent's place. I wish I had had someone of our models there with me, it would have been the perfect setting for white lace dresses! Auringonlasku maalla vanhempieni luona. Harmi ettei mukana ollut ytään malleistamme, maisema olisi sopinut täydellisesti valkoisiin pitsimekkoihin!

Black lace

There hasn't been much black lace in our Lace Diary, perhaps because summer naturally calls for simple white cotton & linen and matching laces and broderies? But autumn is coming; dark nights, candlelight and sophisticated parties, to which all there's no better mood enhancer than black lace. It's mysterious, sexy, dramatic and decadent as much as white lace is innocent, sweet, happy. So I gathered together black wool crepe and different black laces which Tiina will turn into a little black dress inspired by sort of gothic Twenties. I've already got matching shoes and pearls for it. Now I need dark wine lipstick and a dark romantic boudoir, or perhaps a fancy cocktail bar that's on the top floor of some Art Deco skyscraper to wear it in.

Black lace inspirration from Lula magazine, one of my top-three favourite magazines in the whole world.

Summertime delights

It's not just lacemaking all the time. Yes, it's the best berry year for ages. One just needs to shake her hand towards the bush and the berries practically jump to the bowl by themselves.

Sewing continues but it's oh so enjoyable outdoors! Ompelutyö jatkuu, kuinka nautinnollista se onkaan ulkosalla.

Last photoshoot pics from my camera

The room and the light on her face in this photo remind me of old Flemish paintings like Vermeer's famous Milkmaid. Kuvan huone ja kasvoille lankeava valo muistuttava vanhoja flaamilaisia maalauksia kuten Vermeerin maitoa kaatavaa tyttöä.

At the Old Parsonage walls havve been papered and re-papered over and over again. Now that the papers have started to peel, we can see a glimpse of all the layers: roses, dots, stripes, plain...
Vanhassa Pappilassa seinät on tapetoitu uudelleen ja uudelleen. Tapettikerrokset ovat alkaneet kuoriutua ja saamme kurkistaa kaikkien kerrosten läpi: ruusuja, raitoja, pilkkuja, yksiväristä...

And even old newspapers! Alta paljastuu jopa vanhoja sanomalehtiä (aika koristeellinen fontti. Tekeeköhän kukaan tapetteja fraktuuratekstikuviolla?).

Old magazine found at our photographer's attice contained a rare treasure inside / Valokuvaajamme ullakolta löytyneen lehden välistä paljastui herkkä aarre.

There were many more wonderful moments, for example Riina captured in camera our cake garden party when we ate the cake that had been used in the photoshoot. I hope she has time to upload some of the photos.
Kuvauksissa oli monta muutakin ihanaa hetkeä, ainakin Riina sai tallennettua kakkupuutarhajuhlat, joissa kuvauksissa lavasteena ollut kakku syötiin.
