It's been said before, but lace can be any shape you can draw. Here's more proof via http://thomasburr.wordpress.com, photos from Russian Lace Museum and their collection of Soviet lace. Tractors, power lines and military ships!
It's beyond me why no-one makes tractor lace for sale these days (and I suspect even these were handmade, not for general use.) I'd buy tractor lace right away! Or any other less usual motif.
